Manoir de Retival
The manoir has a long history. Shards, utility objects, cooking equipment and coins found on the site of the manoir prove that there were first Celtic and then Roman settlements in this area.
Rue St Clair was an important route for trade and transport in Roman times. Throughout the early Middle Ages, the Rétival served as a meeting place for the Knights Templars. The ‘Templars’ Cross’, a listed historical monument from the 12th century at today’s entrance to the manoir site, bears witness to this. For centuries, the principals of Caudebec swore their oath of office in front of the ‘Templars’ Cross’.
About 300 years ago, the old building was replaced by a new building (today the manoir’s midsection). 150 years ago, the manoir was extended and the two side wings were added. The St Clair chapel also dates back to this time.
